    16 Horsepower is a Denver-based American band formed in Los Angeles in 1992 and relocated soon afterward to Colorado. Its center is singer and multi-instrumentalist David Eugene Edwards, whose howling delivery give the songs a severe, unsettled charge. The early music fused country forms with Appalachian and gospel traditions, then pushed them through rock arrangements using banjo, fiddle, bandoneon and a heavy rhythm section. Sackcloth 'N' Ashes made that combination sound primitive, ominous and intensely devotional. Secret South softened the attack without abandoning its fear of sin and judgment, replacing some of the earlier abrasion with a more measured folk sound. By Folklore, guitars and bass had receded further. Acoustic arrangements and traditional songs produced a quieter record that remained dark rather than gentle.

    In 2001, guitarist Steve Taylor left 16 Horsepower, and bassist Pascal Humbert took a larger musical role on Folklore. The band had already begun moving beyond its original lineup: Humbert had returned in the late 1990s after Keven Soll's departure, while Taylor had replaced Jeffrey-Paul Norlander. They issued Olden in 2003, collecting 1993-94 demos and a Denver live set rather than presenting a new studio statement. 16 Horsepower announced its breakup in 2005, citing political and spiritual differences. Edwards continued with Wovenhand; Humbert later joined that project, while Jean-Yves Tola pursued separate work. The original trio announced a reunion in late 2025 and played European dates plus a Montana festival in 2026.
