Bebo Norman is a Georgia-born Christian singer-songwriter who came to music after studying biology and postponing plans for medical school. He spent the mid-1990s playing small venues and touring with Caedmon's Call, then signed with Cliff Young's Watershed Records. The 1999 debut Ten Thousand Days uses acoustic guitar and slow contemporary-folk settings for Norman's warm, clear voice and songs about faith. Its recurring concern with human weakness and grace could make the record sound uniform, but "Rita," about a young girl's death, gave the otherwise gentle album a darker edge. On Big Blue Sky, Norman moved toward acoustic pop/rock without abandoning the songwriting and restrained vocal delivery that marked the debut. Myself When I Am Real kept that pop-folk basis, though the reviews found its production bland and its repeated song forms limiting.
In April 2013, Norman announced that he would retire from music at the end of that year, after touring behind Lights of Distant Cities, his final studio album. The decision returned him to the medical path he had postponed: he later trained as a physician assistant and worked in ear, nose and throat medicine with a focus on sleep disorders. In 2023, he briefly re-entered the music world by joining Caedmon's Call for reunion shows at Nashville's Ryman Auditorium.
