David Crowder Band was a Christian rock and modern worship band formed in Waco, Texas, in the late 1990s through the music program at University Baptist Church. David Crowder's writing placed direct worship lyrics inside arrangements that could move from energetic rock to quieter, reflective passages. The 2003 album Illuminate established that approach with high-energy guitars, electronic textures and moments of jazz-funk, while Crowder's unusual voice kept the songs distinct from standard praise-and-worship recordings. The band signed with sixstepsrecords and grew more exploratory. Sunsets & Sushi recast earlier songs as electronic and dance remixes, dividing reviewers sharply, while A Collision moved further through pop worship, bluegrass and older gospel forms. Its barn recording of "I Saw the Light," made with Marty Stuart and visitors invited through webcams, captured the group's willingness to make worship music in unexpected settings.

In 2012, David Crowder Band ended after a final tour and the release of Give Us Rest, a double album planned as the group's closing project. Crowder continued as a solo artist under the name Crowder, beginning with Neon Steeple in 2014. Four former members formed The Digital Age, carrying elements of the band's electronic rock and worship sound into a new group, while Mike Hogan did not join that project. The band's final performance took place at the Passion conference in January 2012.
