Denison Witmer is a solo singer-songwriter from Lancaster, Pennsylvania, who began playing in the mid-1990s and was already performing at a Pennsylvania coffeehouse by 1995. His early records used acoustic guitar and a close vocal delivery, with songs built as plainspoken accounts of lived experience. Safe Away established the intimate folk approach: the guitar stayed in front while Witmer's distinctive voice carried autobiographical narratives. The 2001 Of Joy and Sorrow widened the frame with backing from friends including Don Peris, whose work as a producer and musician connected Witmer's spare writing to a fuller ensemble. By Philadelphia Songs in 2002, The Six Parts Seven had turned accompaniment into an active collaborator, adding atmosphere and occasional rock weight without erasing the songs' small-scale detail.
In 2003, Witmer changed labels, moving from Burnt Toast Vinyl to Fugitive Records for Recovered, a covers project whose restrained arrangements tested his voice beyond original acoustic songwriting. He then signed with The Militia Group for Are You A Dreamer? in 2005, where Sufjan Stevens played on five tracks and Don Peris contributed across the album. The label later issued Carry the Weight in 2008. Witmer took a longer pause before returning with The Ones Who Wait, released through Asthmatic Kitty in 2012; he followed it with the self-titled Denison Witmer in 2013. After moving from Philadelphia back to Lancaster in 2014, he made American Foursquare, released in 2020. His collaboration with Stevens continued on Anything At All, issued in 2025.
