Fleming & John is a Nashville husband-and-wife duo formed by Fleming McWilliams and John Mark Painter after they met at Belmont University. They first worked with McWilliams' brother Shawn on drums and Stan Rawls on bass, giving the 1995 debut Delusions of Grandeur a full-band attack beneath McWilliams' unusually high, operatic voice. Painter's guitar could turn punky or aggressive, while the songs moved through alternative pop with unusual melodic turns and explicit Christian references. The 1999 Universal follow-up, The Way We Are, shifted toward polished studio pop. Painter reduced the guitar work and built arrangements around an array of less familiar instruments, while McWilliams sang relationship songs whose subjects included desire, regret and material longing. "The Pearl" used Steinbeck's story as a warning about security pursued through wealth.
After The Way We Are appeared in 1999, Fleming & John toured before becoming dormant. Painter continued as a Nashville studio musician and arranger, including work with Ben Folds and other artists, while McWilliams remained associated with their recording projects. The pair also operated International House of Fleming and the Dweeb recording label. In 2015, they raised money through Kickstarter for another Fleming & John album, initially planned for release that year, but the record had still not appeared by 2026. Painter later joined Steve Taylor & The Perfect Foil, whose album Goliath came out in 2014.
