Jimmy Eat World is an alternative rock band formed in Mesa, Arizona, in 1993. Its early music grew from punk into a melodic form of emo-pop built around clear, sometimes raspy vocals, distorted guitars, strong backing harmonies, and choruses designed to stick. The 2000 split EP Jebediah & Jimmy Eat World shows the group balancing upbeat hooks with emotionally charged songs; "No Sensitivity" was singled out repeatedly for its chorus and momentum. The 2001 Bleed American moved faster and harder than the slower, more spacious Clarity sound described in the reviews, replacing much of its piano, bell and chime color with jagged guitars while retaining pop melody. By Futures, the band had turned darker again, with shimmering guitars, radio-friendly rock, and longer ballads; Stay on My Side Tonight added samples and loops to the standard quartet arrangement.
In 1995, bassist Mitchel Porter left and Rick Burch joined. Jimmy Eat World left Capitol after Clarity and signed with DreamWorks, where Bleed American became a commercial breakthrough. The band moved to Interscope for Futures, then stayed active beyond the period covered here, issuing five more studio albums through 2019. In 2025, it shared the song "Failure," written during the Surviving sessions.
