Justin McRoberts is a singer-songwriter from the San Francisco Bay Area who began recording in the late 1990s, after working for Young Life. His early music placed acoustic guitar inside a fuller folk-pop setting, with piano and Hammond B-3 giving the songs a band-oriented frame around a voice that could sound bluesy, conversational or strained by confession. Reason for Living (1999) drew on ministry work and personal hardship, while Father (2000) turned toward grief after his father's suicide and used more intimate, prayer-like writing. The nearly solo Untitled EP (2001) reduced the arrangement to guitar with occasional piano or backing vocals, treating roughness as part of its worship setting. Across these records, McRoberts moved from rhythmic acoustic pop-rock toward spare devotional songs without abandoning direct, autobiographical lyrics.
When 5 Minute Walk went into hiatus around 2001, McRoberts moved into independent release, issuing Trust in 2002 through Grassroots Music. The album kept the acoustic core but returned to fuller production, with songs about fear in relationships and the difficulty of speaking about faith; its most exposed moments were often the simplest. He continued recording independently after 2002, releasing Deconstruction in 2003 and further projects during the following decade. His work also expanded into books, teaching and retreat work, while music remained part of his public life. By 2010 he had released Through Songs I Was First Undone, a collection of covers. Later projects included the CMY(K) sequence, K and Curse of the Faithful in 2020.
