Mogwai is a Scottish post-rock band formed in Glasgow in 1995. The early music is built from quiet passages that accumulate into distorted guitar, feedback and pounding drums, with vocals used sparingly and often buried in the arrangement. Young Team established the method through long, escalating pieces such as "Mogwai Fear Satan," where one riff changes intensity rather than direction. The band also treated heaviness with humor: Come On Die Young carried references to Kappa sportswear and the self-mocking idea of "Sportz Goth," while its tense instrumentals used sampled television and strings. By Rock Action, the sound had shortened and opened out, adding subdued singing and orchestration around piano-led passages. Happy Songs for Happy People stayed within that spacious, emotional approach, occasionally returning to the sudden violence of the earlier records.
In 2015, guitarist John Cummings left Mogwai after nearly two decades, and the band continued as a quartet. Before then, Mogwai had moved beyond the guitar-centered records described above into film and television scoring, including Les Revenants and Atomic, while maintaining the Rock Action label and a regular touring schedule. Stuart Braithwaite, Dominic Aitchison, Martin Bulloch and Barry Burns remained the core lineup. The band released As the Love Continues in 2021 and reached number one on the UK album chart, then issued The Bad Fire on January 24, 2025.
