Mus was a duo from Gijon, Asturias, formed in 1997. Its early records treated Asturian vocals as part of the atmosphere rather than as a foregrounded pop hook: Fai, the 1999 debut, used quiet beats beneath chilly keyboards, with sampled strings and trip-hop traces, to make loose, dark electronic music. The self-titled Mus added clearer vocals, guitar, orchestral color, and firmer beats without losing the sparse electronic base. On Aida, the duo stretched that method into two long pieces whose music-box tones, piano, acoustic guitar, and horns dissolved into one another through slow changes. The shift was gradual but clear. By El Naval, the electronics had receded, leaving piano and acoustic guitar at the center, with restrained drums beneath dreamy Asturian singing in a sparser, darker setting.
In 2007, Mus issued La vida and then entered an indefinite hiatus after roughly a decade as a working duo. No replacement lineup or reunion followed. Fran Gayo later worked as a writer and film-festival programmer in Spain; he died in 2025 at age 55.
