Neal Morse is a progressive rock songwriter who first became known through Spock's Beard, formed in Los Angeles in 1992 with his brother Alan Morse. The band combined elaborate arrangements with melodic writing and a pop sensibility, while Morse's later solo work kept the long-form structures but placed them inside explicitly Christian narratives. Testimony presented his conversion as a two-disc account shaped by symphonic prog, power-pop, ballad writing and acoustic passages. One recast the Genesis story as a human drama, moving from orchestral grandeur to flamenco-tinged rock before ending with a reunion between the lost man and God. On ?, the music became heavier and more continuous, using the biblical Tabernacle to frame a search for entrance and acceptance.
In 2002, Morse left Spock's Beard after Snow and began concentrating on solo work. The touring group assembled around Testimony included Mike Portnoy on drums and Randy George on bass, a partnership that continued through One, Testimony Live and ?. Live performance became part of the project rather than a separate presentation: Testimony Live staged the conversion narrative with a large ensemble and a visible change from dark clothing to white. Morse later recorded with The Neal Morse Band and Flying Colors while continuing his solo career through further concept albums.
