    NewSong is a Christian contemporary band formed in Valdosta, Georgia, in 1981 by musicians connected with Morningside Baptist Church, including Eddie Carswell. Its early sound used adult contemporary arrangements with upbeat pop and light rock, while its ballads approached the inspirational style. All Around the World, released in 1993, paired direct evangelistic writing with songs about Billy Graham, a Kentucky school for children with special needs, and the second coming; it also recast the Four Tops' "Reach Out, I'll Be There" as a Christian invitation. After two original members left, People Get Ready introduced a broader vocal lineup and a more varied sound, with lush harmonies, acoustic pop, soulful phrasing, and brass-colored power pop. By More Life, NewSong was making polished middle-of-the-road CCM built around vocal blend.

    In 1994, Eddie Middleton and Bobby Apon left, and Russ Lee, Charles Billingsley, Leonard Ahlstrom, and Scotty Wilbanks joined Carswell and Billy Goodwin. The expanded lineup continued through further personnel changes and the band's growing concert work. In 2001, NewSong released "Christmas Shoes," which became its most widely recognized song and helped establish a continuing holiday presence. Rescue followed in 2005 as a live worship project, reflecting the group's concert repertoire while drawing divided reviews over its length and repetition. NewSong marked its thirtieth anniversary with One True God in 2010, then continued recording and touring through releases such as Swallow the Ocean and Faithful.
