Nichole Nordeman is a Christian singer-songwriter from Colorado Springs who began pursuing music professionally in Los Angeles during the mid-1990s. A Gospel Music Association songwriting contest led to her contract with Star Song and the 1998 debut Wide Eyed. She wrote the album's lyrics, which treated doubt, pain, salvation, and resurrection as personal questions rather than settled subjects. Piano, restrained vocals, drum loops, and mixed pop, rock, folk, jazz, blues, and classical touches gave the record an exploratory sound. This Mystery kept the emphasis on piano and direct songwriting while adding more upbeat pop. By Woven and Spun, Nordeman had shifted toward worship and adult contemporary arrangements, with fewer questions and more explicit praise. Brave later added programmed sounds and guitar to its acoustic base.
After Brave, Nordeman paused her recording career to raise her children, a decision she described as choosing family life over the demands of touring and promotion. She remained active as a songwriter during the hiatus, contributing to collaborative projects and soundtrack work. A greatest-hits collection appeared in 2007. Nordeman returned with the six-song The Unmaking in 2015, followed by Every Mile Mattered in 2017, her first Christian album to reach number one. Fragile followed in 2019. Her early catalog had moved from intimate, questioning piano pop toward worship writing and more modern production; her later records resumed the same singer-songwriter focus after the family-centered interruption.
