    Sinead O'Connor was an Irish singer from Dublin who first worked in the mid-1980s with Ton Ton Macoute before moving into a solo career. Her music joined a forceful vocal style to songs that could move from anger to sorrow within the same body of work. The 1997 collection So Far...The Best of Sinead O'Connor shows her range without settling on one style, moving between rap-influenced tracks and Irish folk adaptations while retaining her emotional intensity. On Faith & Courage, released in 2000, polished pop, hip-hop, dub, and electronic textures surrounded confessional lyrics. Sean-Nos Nua then turned toward old Irish songs, using restrained arrangements and traditional instruments rather than the larger modern production of the preceding record.

    In 1999, O'Connor was ordained by a dissident Catholic group, adding a religious role to a public career already marked by outspoken political and personal statements. She announced her retirement from music in 2002 and again in 2003, but returned to recording; Collaborations, released in 2005, gathered work with Peter Gabriel, Massive Attack, Moby, U2, Jah Wobble, and other artists. She continued releasing music, including Theology in 2007 and I'm Not Bossy, I'm the Boss in 2014, and adopted the name Shuhada' Sadaqat after converting to Islam in 2018 while continuing to use Sinead O'Connor professionally. She died in London on July 26, 2023, aged 56.
