    Formed in San Diego in 1996, Switchfoot is an alternative rock band whose early work joined power-pop craft to Christian themes without settling into a single format. On The Legend of Chin (1997), the trio moved between raw guitar rock, Police-influenced sparseness, and acoustic writing; its subject matter could shift from a spoof of Ben Hur to a serious meditation on heaven. Jon Foreman's writing supplied the continuity, using unusual structures and playful titles alongside direct spiritual language. Learning to Breathe (2000) added grungier guitars and electronically treated vocals, giving its varied songs a more polished sense of arrangement while retaining the contrast between driving songs and ballads. With The Beautiful Letdown (2003), keyboards and electronica widened the sound into larger modern-rock anthems, while its concern with apathy and the search for a better way to live remained.

    Jerome Fontamillas joined before The Beautiful Letdown, turning the original trio into a quartet and adding keyboards, guitar, and electronic textures. The album's success brought Switchfoot beyond the Christian music market, helped by songs featured in the 2002 film A Walk to Remember, and led to a Columbia Records period. Their 2004 concert video drew criticism for nervous performance and a narrow set built around the new material. Nothing Is Sound (2005) continued the same broad sound; one review found it initially ordinary but more rewarding with repeated listening, while another saw little change from its predecessor. After leaving Columbia, the band built its own studio and continued independently. An extended break began in December 2017, followed by a return to recording with Native Tongue in 2019. Switchfoot released Forever Now in June 2026.
