The Deluxtone Rockets formed in 1996 in Muskegon, Michigan, beginning as a punk band before moving toward the swing revival and signing with Tooth & Nail. By the 1999 debut, they played a fast blend of swing and rockabilly, with bebop color and punk energy, built around a prominent upright bass, hard-charging drums and a three-piece horn section. The songs were playful on the surface, with titles such as God's Cadillac, but faith entered through comic imagery and occasional direct struggle, as in Long Road Home. Reviewers also noted the band's unusually forceful live attack. Green Room Blues changed the balance: the horns were gone, the group had become a four-piece, and the writing turned toward rockabilly and darker, more reflective subjects. Its songs moved between styles, sometimes awkwardly, but the shift was deliberate.
In 2000, the band had trouble maintaining a regular live schedule after its drummer left, and a van fire destroyed its transport on the night of a show. The next year brought Green Room Blues, completed amid the death of producer Gene Eugene and the departure of the horn players. The original run then ended in 2001. Later sources disagree about what followed: one gives the group a 2008 return with a new lineup and lists a 2009 demo, while another describes the band as defunct after 2001 and treats new material as only rumored.
