The Dingees formed in Orange County, California, in summer 1996 as a side project connected to the O.C. Supertones and their local circle. They built a sound from punk, ska, and reggae, with Pegleg as the singer and principal songwriter. The 1998 debut Armageddon Massive paired bouncy mid-tempo punk with slow ska, roots-reggae rhythms, and restrained horns; Pegleg's lyrics addressed racial stereotypes through the eyes of inner-city youth, while other songs confronted pop culture and urban violence. Sundown to Midnight made the separation between styles clearer, placing fast punk beside relaxed ska and reggae with deep bass and strong hooks. By The Crucial Conspiracy, the band sounded rawer, added synthesizers, and gave its slower reggae-rock songs more room, including songs about eating disorders and faith in the face of catastrophe.
Membership shifted before the debut, as Supertones touring commitments pulled some early players away. Ethan Luck joined Pegleg, Bean, and Jeff Holmes for Armageddon Massive; Dave Chevalier later rejoined, while Holmes was replaced first by Brad and then by Aaron Landers. The move from BEC Recordings to Tooth & Nail Records accompanied The Crucial Conspiracy in 2001, whose sessions were redirected to producer Frank Lenz after Gene Eugene died two weeks before recording began. The Dingees later released Rebel Soul Sound System in 2010, then recorded as Peg & the Rejected before returning to the Dingees name for the Dropseeds EP in 2023.
