The Urban Hillbilly Quartet is a St. Paul, Minnesota ensemble that began as a 1995 jam session in a local bar. Led in songwriting by Erik Brandt, it built songs from Americana and alt-country while leaving room for jazz phrasing. Old-time fiddle and blues guitar sat beside comic detail. The name's "quartet" was never a reliable headcount: early recordings used a larger ensemble, guest players, and a background chorus. The 1998 debut St. Paul Town moved from observations of suburban life toward inward-looking songs, including an ersatz hymn about grief and spiritual need. Beautiful Lazy kept the loose playing and blunt writing, including the murder song "Trespass." By Amelia's Boot, the arrangements had moved beyond Americana into jazz and soul, with doo-wop appearing in "Sunshower," while a closing suite followed Brandt's grief after the unexpected death of his friend Tim.
In 2002, Lanky But Macho gathered live tracks, demos, and unreleased songs from the changing lineup. The following year's The A-List (1995-2001) assembled fifteen live performances, documenting how much of UHQ's identity depended on extended playing rather than studio polish. After 2003, Brandt began issuing solo albums for material that did not fit the band's instrumentation, while continuing to perform with UHQ musicians. The band remained a St. Paul project rather than a closed 1990s story and was still performing in the 2020s. Brandt continued working as a songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, with accordion among his instruments.
