Undercover is a Christian rock band from Fullerton, California, formed in the early 1980s within Orange County's punk and new-wave scene. The group began by adapting punk's speed and anger to explicitly Christian songs, then moved toward darker and more inward writing. The 1986 debut Branded was marked by melancholy, self-loathing, doubt and guilt rather than triumphal religious certainty. By Balance of Power in 1990, the sound had become hard rock, built around dark vocals, power-chord guitar and lyrics that paired anxiety with spiritual hope. Devotion pushed further toward grunge, with heavy bass, wah-wah guitar and a horn-led track. Forum then added a new lead vocalist and brought keyboards, funk and strings into the band's arrangements.
After an early hiatus in 1987, Undercover returned with Balance of Power, while Sim Wilson and Gym Nicholson pursued the separate project Boys Club and Ojo Taylor helped establish Broken Records. Rob Gallas took lead vocals on Forum in 1994, but the band later settled on the four-person lineup of Ojo Taylor, Gym Nicholson, Sim Wilson and Gary Dean Olsen. That lineup reunited in the studio in 2002 after eight years without a new recording, producing I Rose Falling, a contemplative record that retained the band's rock weight while leaving its punk sound behind. Undercover played two reunion shows in California in August 2005. Taylor later worked in music education and artist management.
