First of all let me state that the demos and rarities of the band called Admiral Twin are far and above better than most bands' best-of collections. All of the material on this release seems to be pre-"Mock Heroic" and therefore holds the lighter feel of earlier releases. I have been a fan of the group since their early releases under the name "Mellowdramatic Wallflowers" and love this new collection of material. The band consists of: Jarrod Gollihare on drums, percussion and vocals, Mark Carr on bass guitar, noises and vocals, Brad Becker on guitar, saxophone and vocals & John Russel on guitar, keyboard, dulcimer and vocals. The band has been around since the early 90's and Odds & Ends is their fifth full release since their debut in 1992. One album every two years is a bit of a stretch for their fans, but each release more than makes up for the time in between.
The Admiral tend to release long albums full of excellent and intelligent pop songs that stay with you long after the original listen. I still find myself humming "Spelunking Through the Chaos" ten years after I first heard the song. This new collection promises to have the same effect. I have already totally fallen in love with three songs. They are "Dancing On the Sun," "Tomorrow," and "Sunday Blue." There is also a killer version of the old Dick Dale classic, "Misirlou." If these were the only songs on the album it would still be worth the effort to get it, but there are 20 songs on this album. I had the opportunity to see the band a few years ago when they toured the country opening up for "Hanson" and to this day I still think they should have been the headliner. Supposedly this album is a sort of teaser to keep the fans content till a new release comes out in 2003. I for one am looking forward to it. I hope you are too.
