Amy Morriss makes her debut with this Myrrh release, I'm A Believer. However, everything about this project points to a much more mature artist, both as singer and songwriter. This is an album that is even better than the record company hype said it was. The project also benefits from the production skills of Dennis Matkosky (Al Jarreau, Diana Ross, Chicago). Combined with the finest studio musicians, the result creates a synthesis of pop and R&B that is unique in CCM.
This musical effort also packs a powerful message. The title cut expresses her personal need to lean and depend on Christ, and that theme is carried throughout the whole record in songs like "Devotion" and "What God Deserves." "The Other Side Of Broken" is a powerful account of healing and restoration. The last song "I'll Be Here Loving You" is a beautiful love song of commitment.
The songs are generally positive and upbeat, but don't have a really fast dance beat. The vocal quality is pure and clear but without a harsh edge. This debut album compares favorably to the best of Cindy Morgan and Kim Boyce, and we can expect that it will enjoy similar success. I personally hope to hear much more of Amy Morriss and Dennis Matkosky in Christian music of the future.
