Astaire is a brother/sister duo composed of vocalist/keyboardist Erica Driscoll and guitarist/drummer Bruce Driscoll that transplanted to New York City from Michigan, via Brazil. They recently released their debut EP, Don't Whisper Lies on Wax Divine Records.
Don't Whisper Lies is five tracks of sugary pop songs. The five songs on this short twenty minute EP would not seem out of place on one of those Mix radio stations, jammed somewhere between Sugar Ray and Vanessa Carlton, as all of the songs fit nicely into the 3-4 minute verse/chorus/verse/chorus/bridge/chorus format. A couple of the tracks have a sort of dance-pop feel, while others are dreamy pop in the feel of Sixpence None the Richer or The Cardigans.
Vocally, Erica has a light, graceful voice. The rhythm section carries the songs here, with tight drums and clear bass lines, while keys, synths, and guitars ornament the songs. A fun fact about the album is that Adam Schlesinger from Fountains of Wayne fame played drums on one of the tracks. While nothing on here is as immediately catchy as "Stacy's Mom," this is a decent enough pop album.
