Human Kind, Chris Lizotte's fourth album, (second on the Metro One label) shows him departing somewhat from the blues-based material that appeared on his prior work. Exploring more of a rock/folk vein, the move may disappoint some of his long-time fans, but they shouldn't be too quick to dismiss the change-Lizotte still displays plenty of soul, and he is in fine voice. The record starts off a little on the mellow side with the title track, which contrasts the limitations of our humanity with the unlimited love and acceptance God gives us.
The pace picks up with the next cut, "The Love Of The Father's Arms." The song, which has a good hook, addresses Lizotte's desire for growth in character.
I wanna be the one to not care about fame, Not care about money, Not care about man's approval. I wanna be a friend to mine enemy Not care what they do, or say about me Just love with no conditions...
That desire for unconditional love is reiterated in another mid-tempo rocker, "Hard Enough." Lizotte talks about the importance in unity among believers when he says
Who am I to judge you, Cause Lord knows, I've got enough problems of my own. I need you to love me, don't care if we disagree, For unity was meant for the brotherhood we share All I want to do is grow in the love of Jesus Christ...
"You Put The Fire In Me" and "Pure Of Heart" are two more songs in the rock vein, the second drenched with some distortion. Both take the lyrical bend that Lizotte has shown in the past, speaking directly to God either in praise or supplication. The same vein in lyrics are displayed in "Healing Oil" and "Psalm 69," two stark ballads that really make effective use of Lizotte's ability to emote, vocally, without overdoing it.
My two favorite songs were probably "I Got It All" and "The Sun Done Went Away." Both are acoustically-driven, with rolling rhythms and simple, but very effective, lyrics. The first cut celebrates the blessings that God has given Lizotte, while the second contemplates tougher times, and the desire to withstand them.
I've been a fan of Lizotte's for a long time, and this recording certainly only solidifies his standing with me. His heart is apparent on every cut, and the musicianship is excellent. Producer John Andrew Schreiner pulls out some great performances, and helps bring a cohesiveness to the project.
