Out of Tone Zone Studio in Chicago comes "purified rock music" from Contender. In the tradition of Rez, Contender belts out gut-level female lead vocals, driving rock 'n' roll, and an upfront message. "Don't Do It" encourages those contemplating suicide to turn to Jesus, because "your life's worth living." Outstanding guitar work on this one. Nice solos and hi-vol metal! The lead vocals are passionate, but they are sometimes off key. The ballad, "Guilty of Love," reminds us that Jesus was crucified for the crime of...love. The guitar solo cries on this one - very moving. "Serpent Slayer" features a semi-new wave chorus that sounds a bit dated. But the bass guitarist and drummer add nice touches to the song. As usual, guitars are screamin'. "Kiss Me Not" commands evil "in the name of Jesus" to "just go away." The song sustains the high energy felt throughout this four-song cassette. Overall, this is a good sounding tape. Musically, everything is happening. The guitar work on this project is especially impressive. However, the band might focus more attention on their vocal pitches. Still, Contender has produced an enjoyable tape. Check it out.
