David Levin of The Screaming Yahoos has released a solo effort, Stepping on My Hat that rivals his previous efforts with the Yahoos. What makes this CD standout is the uncanny aural allusions to The Police, Guadalcanal Diary, Duncan Sheik (minus the doom), Squeeze, and Fountains of Wayne without sounding like a copycat.
The opening cut, "Demolition Boy" is a solid rocker about the "relationship wrecker" in all of us. Punch and crunchy guitar backup this pop gem. The title track turns to a funky and smoky groove with a positive bridge of hope. Great harmonies and feel to this tune - a standout tune. "Blood and Feathers" is my fav track as it is reminiscent of early Police reggae infused power-pop. Wonderful imagery instilled in the lyrics. Things get simple and unplugged with "Let's Think About It". Beautiful tune about contemplating love and life. "We're OK (For Humans)" moves into a somber mood with looking at taking our world and gifts for granted. Levin even adds a treat on the hidden track - an honest and pristine acoustic version of "Demolition Boy". In its stripped down form, you can really appreciate Levin's songwriting capability.
Stepping on My Hat works because the effort is uncomplicated and honest. So, if you happen to see this CD in the store or online, don't hesitate. It is well worth the price of admission.
