Glorybox is delicious. Most of the tracks feature Sarah's lightly accented Bjork-ish vocals, married to absolutely thick guitar work, stirred together with equal parts indie-rock smartness, and math rock timing fully embodied in crashing cymbals, high hats and reverb, and seasoned with various keyboards, Rhodes and Hammonds. Needless to say, there is much there to build from.
"Farewell" features male lead vox, rhythmic tambourine, fuzzed out, atmospheric guitars. "Magnetic" should appeal to Nobstreater lovers, and Viva Voce fans alike, both for the delightful Anita Robinson-like melodies, and the syncopated drumming skills that are right up Geoff Cotton's alley.
The ambient rock of "Sunshower" might belong to a Brian Eno school of thought, with echoing, distorted vocals.
As is the case with much emo/math rock, there is a tendency to have sparse, minimal use of vocals on many tracks, or burying them within a thirty-second span somewhere in the midst of a five or six minute guitar and drum discourse. "Sonic Ocean" is just such a song, with lyrics that speak to humanity of our own fallen nature. "I am a monster inside myself."
Glorybox has figured out how to coalesce some of the best elements of modern music. If this is the future of rock and roll, then we can all take a deep breath and relax.
