A reviewer's job for live albums is actually a lot easier than with normal studio albums. People don't usually want to buy a live cd from a band they've never heard. Therefore, I'm really only talking to people who are already Gomez fans. And the only thing they want to know is whether the quality of the concert is good and if they songs are performed solidly.
So, fans, here is your nuts and bolts verdict: The concert sonically sounds excellent and is performed flawlessly.
Unlike low quality live albums there are no weird, random volume fluctuations or hissing of electronic items. Indeed, the sound rivals that of studio recordings. It is crisp and clear, with only the vocals occasionally taking on the "big room" feel. This is more a certificate of authenticity than a distraction, though. That, coupled with occasional crowd noise and interaction with the band, are the main clues to the listener that this is a live recording instead of a studio re-interpretation.
Despite that, there is still a strong studio jive to this cd. What the quality captures in perfection, the recording loses in soul. So if you like live versions of songs without the quirky distractions that often mark live albums, check out Out West. Unless you are a hardcore Gomez fan, in which case you will want to purchase this album as soon as possible.
