Going with the liner notes, LN is Gary Murray with help from Dalton Brand, Nathan Abel, Denny Koop, and Kira Jones; and is a Villa Production. Going without the liner notes, since there isn't much said beyond listing the players, LN's Plum Brook EP is five songs of ethereal gloom and moon.
Reaching into the textures of shoegazer, Murray pulls out slow, almost sub-tempo melodies so cautious and restrained that a tension is created in what is left out, rather than what is injected, and his shy, manic singing whispers along and within glimmering synthetics and haunting loops. At times it's the same old sad sonic story told by British and socal patriarchs, but at others — as in "Goodbye Rain Song" and "L'Avenir" (which accelerates the misty LN moods by accentuating them with Jones' freak-amazing soprano backing) — it's a very new story. A story defying genrefication, and leaping into plush, certain, panoramic personal woe and downer noir.
Bottom line, Plum Brook is obsessively morose and sentiently placid, carried by tried and true melodies, polished by trained musicianship, and spiced with sound experimentation. Sure to halt your day or feed your dementia.
