This list could go on longer but the only one that matters right now is this one. Lifetime to Kid Dynamite to Paint It Black. Dan Yemin and Dave Wagenschutz were both members of the legendary and influential New Jersey punk band Lifetime. Dave went on to play with Good Riddance but then came back with Dan to form the popular Philadelphia punk band Kid Dynamite. Dan and David are back together but with a slight change. Dan has put down the axe and picked up the mic and nothing has skipped a beat. They are joined with former Curse guitarist Dave Hause and on bass Andy Nelson.
They came together to form Paint It Black over a year ago and within that time they put out a demo, which was one of my top five albums of last year, they contributed two songs to a compilation called The Philadelphia Sound that featured The Curse, Go! For The Throat, Knives Out and Paint It Black. They also got signed to Jade Tree Records and put out their debut full length called "CVA". It's been a busy year but it's been amazing.
"CVA" is one of the best hardcore and/or punk albums I have heard in years. It's fast and short but right to the point. Dan uses his new position as a vocalist to tackle issues and to vent his anger and frustrations in a whole new way. I love Dan's lyrics and vocal abilities and when it's added with Dave Hause's backing vocals and guitar hooks it just makes a perfect combination. This band has great chemistry live and it spills over onto their recordings. Their aggression and anger transform into tight, passionate, catchy anthems.
Dan's lyrics are straight forward, honest, and angry and are far from being cheesy or generic. He takes on politics, social standings, and personal tribulations and combines them with the perfect hardcore sound and then shoves it right in your face without any regrets. Everything with this band just fuses together so well that you have to pay attention. Did I mention that this album contains 17 songs and is only 18:41 long? Amazing.
The recording quality is top notch and another great job by Jade Tree. I urge all fans of punk rock and hardcore to get this album. "CVA" is the best hardcore/punk album of the year.
