Quality Scrub is an alternative Christian punk-pop act with mountains of energy, and a great deal of potential.
The band's self-produced debut cassette, Pure, is filled with easily understood lyrics, which clearly demonstrate the spiritual direction behind the music. Quality Scrub describes itself as a "jocular band," although often expressing the difficulty in living the Christian lifestyle, as Marcus Fish sings in "Half the Man":
If I were half the man that you wanted I'd be twice the man that I am.
Another song, bearing the band's name as a title, simply expresses the need to give our souls a "quality scrub!"
The band's edgy style varies enough throughout the course of ten songs to display some versatility. The heavy pop and shifting rhythms of "Help You Down" suggest a Smashing Pumpkins influence. Though sonically a bit rough at times, the band occasionally tosses in some harmony to good effect.
This is an album that makes one want to meditate, eyes closed and arms stretched, on lyrics that call for a surrendered life. All in all, Pure is an exciting album and a bold witness. Two thumbs up!
