Rocky Votolato got his start in music with the band Waxwing in 1996. His solo career launched in 1999, but his music is still largely an underground phenomenon.
The angst-filled acoustic stylings of Votolato naturally draw comparisons to the earlier music of Dashboard Confessional. Yet there are some major differences. Votolato is not restricted to any one way of creating a song. Some songs are rock-driven, others are slower while just as passionate. Some of the songs even find an alt-country influence, but this element is always used cautiously to fit the overall picture the album presents.
While Chris Carrabba's lyrics are largely influenced by his being a hopeless romantic, Votolato maintains a more grounded look at life through his lyrics. His songs give the understanding that though relationships are important, there are many other elements in life to put into the picture. Votolato displays a unique look at the world we live in with commentary on violence, government, wealth, and truth.
In a music world full of clones it's refreshing to see an artist that sticks out from the norm, unafraid to take a hard look at life and bare his soul. The old saying is true in music as well: honesty is the best policy.
