On their debut album, Red, Sarah Laughing has created something truly special. Every song contains excellence that is all too often missing from today's recording artists. This is a band that understands that God calls us to perfection in everything we do.

Probably the most exciting element of this album is the underlying production. Unlike most modern artists, they know that sometimes musical arrangements are often the most powerful when they are the most subtle. There is not a single "solo" performance on the project. The musicians are masters of their instruments who are content to add to the total effect without trying to dominate. The result is a fresh balance and harmony. Kevin McKinstry-Cooke, who wrote most of the music, along with Todd Brubaker, who did most of the brass arrangements, have crafted a simply profound musical offering with obvious rock, jazz, and blues influences. If you listen carefully, you may hear a few riffs from old Sam Cooke and Otis Redding songs.

The vocal tracks were done mostly by the group's two outstanding vocalists, Loren Hartman and Marlisa Melendres. Their strong, uncompromising vocals are what allow the musicians the latitude to craft the music as well as they do.

Loren Hartman is also the primary lyricist of the group, and his creativity shines forth in every song in a well-balanced mix. There are praise songs of pure joy and thanksgiving along with songs that search and question. Somehow the group has managed to mix this blend together in a way that sounds just right.

If you enjoy jazz, blues, or light rock, you will find something to like on this CD. It is a truly eclectic and exciting recording.
