Do you remember a time when ska was popular? It had its run and then "died." Out of this immensely popular genre appeared many-a-band. To tell you the truth, ska never died for me. The happy, upbeat-ness of the music has always lived on in my heart. That's where Save Ferris comes in.
Lead singer Monique Powell has an absolutely sweet voice that goes perfectly with the music. She almost sounds like a 50s big band singer and has that perfect crooning technique down pat. Not only is Monique's voice very cohesive with the music, but lead guitarist and vocalist Brian Mashburn makes a very nice addition. Monique and Brian's voices are a match made in heaven.
Just about every track on this album is worthy of snapping or skanking (the skank is the official ska dance for those of you who don't know). "Come On Eileen," a Dexy's Midnight Runners cover, is practically better than the original. "Spam" is a classic about that pink meat substitute. "Superspy" has that big band sound to it and "Sorry My Friend" is another on my favorites list.
If you're with me and don't think ska ever really died, pick up It Means Everything by Save Ferris. Hey, it even makes for good dancing music.
