The first part of the last part of the Legend trilogy is finally out, and in keeping with the theme we have a gothic / classic adaptation of the apocalypse that assumes you have 78-plus minutes set aside to absorb thyself into the rock opera for the new millennium.
Even though a new drummer (Victor Deaton) and guest guitarist Carljohan Grimmark (Narnia) contribute here, the sound is very consistent with the band's overall identity. I particularly enjoy hearing more of the Middle Eastern style modal scales on the guitar (reminiscent of the hypnotic "Beast" from Legend I). The big radio hit still escapes Saviour Machine, but the sweeping orchestral power of this band is as powerful and captivating as ever. And, like a good sequel or series piece, one can take a single album and still take a musical journey with beginning, tension, and resolution. One not need to invest the four hours to take in the output thus far in order to enjoy any one movement of the "official soundtrack for the end of the world."
