Since joining the internet a couple of years ago, I have come to the point where I hear about new bands almost constantly. Many of these artists sound interesting, but the bewildering number makes it almost impossible to keep up. Son Volt is one of those bands, but after hearing a number of recommendations they were one I had to explore further.
Musically I'd describe the songs as roots-rock--strong country and folk influences, along with the odd rocker (some of the latter probably wouldn't seem out of place amongst the Vigilantes Of Love's newer material). The principal songwriter is Jay Farrar, formerly of Uncle Tupelo. Farrar appears to have a lot of questions, and places a strong emphasis on cultural commentary and the advance of time.

This style of music is something that people usually love or hate - if you do like roots-rock then this album would seem to me to be an essential purchase.
