I was listening to ChristianRock.Net one day and I heard this awesome rock song, a real, guitar-filled rock song. My first thought was "Wow!" and my second thought was "Who are these guys?" The band singing "Beyond the Sunset" was Spark, and the album is Tomorrow is Today.
Tomorrow is Today isn't the first album for Spark, but it will be the one to put them on the map. There are several awesome songs on this album that are more than enough to make it a must-have. "All There Really Is" is a song about the simplicity of a relationship with God, and the security of knowing that all we have to do is put our trust in him, and he'll see us through. "Flower" is a sweet, tender song about godly love, both for him and for a (future) spouse. "Change" challenges us to live every day like it's our last because we never know when Jesus might be coming back. Of all the good songs on this CD, I'd have to say that "Not Alone" and "Believe" are my favorites. "Not Alone" is a beautiful ballad about taking God into your heart to fill the void as only He can.
Take me now and fill the void that's missing,
Show me how you'll always be the one to listen.
Through it all, you've made me all your own,
And now I'm not alone.
The emotion Dave Truscott, Spark's lead singer, pumps into this song is just amazing. The lyrics aren't especially deep, they're actually pretty straightforward, but the honesty is very refreshing.
"Believe" is nothing more than a proud declaration of faith. But it's got a catchy tune and a chorus that sticks in your head:
You can believe it or not,
You can say it's just a myth,
You can trust and obey,
You can say He doesn't exist,
But I know He came and died,
Shed His blood on a tree,
Three days later He arose,
And set me free."
Tomorrow has its rough spots, but overall, this is a very good rock and roll record. If you like bands like Creed, you should like Spark. Their lyrical honesty is refreshing, and the music is a lot of fun. This strikes me as a great "road trip" album, at least, once it warms up. So if you've heard Spark and asked yourself, who are these guys? the answer is, one of the hottest new bands in Christian music.
