A six-piece ensemble from southern New Jersey, Strength in Numbers shows surprising potential on their introduction LP The Veil. The solos and backdrops provided by guitarist brothers Mike and Joe Gurnari illustrate obvious talent. The machine-gun snare intro on "Houdini" propels you into a tight jam session--but it is quickly weakened by a three second mini-scream. What happened to the six-measure death howl? How disappointing.
Though the trip back to the eighties entertains temporarily, repetitive choruses and slogging verses don't produce the necessary power that is vital to quality metal. The Veil was a step in the right direction but did not achieve, for SIN, enough of an individual sound. If the prospect of Maiden metalcore pricks your interest, definitely check these guys out.
