I am a huge fan of mid eighties/early nineties DC style emo. I love that sound and I love that style. With bands like Rites of Spring, Nation Of Ulysses, Lungfish, Dag Nasty (Wig Out at Denko's), and even Swiz; my mind wishes for new acts to follow those footsteps. I think the best example of a band jumping back to those days would be Oakland, CA's The Shivering. Their new release, & Brand the Ground With Storm and Song, is basically a collection of all their older and out of print material. It's a look into the past but also a look or progression. With these guys being from California, there is no doubt in my mind that they were influenced by other bands such as The Swing Kids and many of the bands from the mid nineties screamo explosion, as well as the DC area bands. The closest band I can compare them to is probably Rites Of Spring. They are a little bit more raw than they were but overall the sound stays the same.
This is an amazing album and on my top ten of the year. This is for true emo enthusiasts.
