Here's an excellent video package value priced at $10.99. Much like the HM Video Mag that I find myself working on, there's some up-close interviews spliced in with background action and a rolling scrapbook of photos. The interviews are very visually appealing, using just a simple 2-camera setup that warms the interview.
The video for the tune "Bearing Gruesome Cargo" is very good. The band's playing in a small room with a small halfpipe that a few skaters do some riding on while the band plays. It presents the band in the best video image they've been afforded, helping boost their already good image. Some of the shots and camera pans are just awesome. While looking like a somewhat limited budget affair, the director/producer did a great job utilizing the tools at his disposal. Pulling this song from the rest of the album gives "Bearing..." a bigger life than it had nestled on the album. The groove is really cool and stands taller than the vocal hook that initially attracted me to the song.
One of the best things that comes out loud and clear on this video is the humor of the band. This is most notable in a short interview segment with Ted Kirkpatrick, where he lists off two of his biggest drumming influences -- Gilligan, and Bobby Brady -- while we see footage of these two TV personalities jamming away.
Pushin' Broom doesn't compete with a mega-budget Metallica video, but it could certainly be played on MTV with no shame. For those of you who bought Video Biopsy and were disappointed, this one is way better.
