The latest entry into a previously untapped market in the CCM world is electronica/techno/house music, which purists would say are three completely different things. For today's purpose, let's consider them just a little bit similar.
For those of you who have no clue what I'm talking about, electronica is music that is almost entirely produced with electronic instruments like synthesizers, drum tracks, fake horns and electric guitars. If that doesn't help, think Moby or Fatboy Slim. Electronica is most often associated with raves and crazy British spy movies. Because this music doesn't quite suit the Word/Sparrow/Myrrh records crowd, it's been left up to Tooth & Nail to bring the best in Christian electronica to you with their offshoot label, PlastiqMusiq.
This is the second of Plastiq Musiq's unheard artists compilations. It includes both signed and independant artists, and attempts to give more exposure to Christian artists in this genre. Joy Electric, House of Wires, Ultraviolet and Fine China may be some of the more recognized names on this compilation. Although I may not know much about this subcategory, I can tell you that to create much of this music is a long, drawn-out process that would make most of us tear out our hair after one hour of fighting with the synthesizer.
The defining difference between these guys and their secular counterparts is the reason they make the music. The primary focus of all Christians' efforts should be to glorify God, and the lyrics on this CD do that. If you like electronica, check it out--your might be surprised with what you hear from a bunch of stuffy evangelicals.
