Is there a "worship trend" in Christian music? Yes and no. Yes, there are many releases coming out that are praise and worship oriented. Yes, there are many record companies making money from this particular type of album right now. Are labels and bands manufacturing praise and worship music to cash in on this heightened buying pattern? I don't think so. I think the labels are probably looking for authentic worship. I don't recall hearing very many (okay, I've heard a couple) albums that don't sound authentic, or that don't offer something that could easily be used to worship the Lord with. Waterdeep has been cutting quite the rep the past few years, with its free-form worship and heady jamming. You Are So Good To Me, with its eclectic roots rock, makes for one cool listen and / or worship-along experience. I love the percussion and feel of "Rest In You." When Lori Chaffer takes over with her sweet, sultry vocals, I wanna melt. Victoria Williams would be proud.

Groups as stylistically diverse as Phillips, Craig and Dean, Third Day, and even the Insyderz have channeled their efforts into this somewhat ambiguous musical mold. Sometimes the fit has been perfect; other offerings have been less than a "joyful noise." You Are So Good to Me, the latest album from…
