In an age when despair sells records and kids seek to win pity through pathetic attire and gloomy faces, it is a breath of fresh air when one hears about a band like Zolof the Rock and Roll Destroyer. Like the anti-depressant that (almost) shares their name, Zolof does a great job at bringing smiles to those who take time to listen. Since their beginning as a band, this Philadelphia foursome has created a blend of sickly-sweet synth-rock that has somehow managed to make them blend seamlessly in with the area's hardcore, metal, and emo scenes.
The Popsicle EP is the band's follow-up to their sophomore full-length, Jalopy Go Far. It was written to be catchy, and that is exactly what it is: nothing more, nothing less. There is nothing overly creative or innovative about any of the songs on this album; it is just fun to listen to. Musically, Zolof sounds like the Reunion Show or Veronica with a female lead-vocalist. There are also some guest vocals on the album from Kenny Vasoli (the Starting Line) and former Zolof member, Anthony Green.
Essentially, if you are a fan of synth driven pop-rock then you will like this album. The songs are full of infectious hooks and will have you singing along in no time. That said, while the Popsicle EP is a fun listen, it really is not anything you haven't heard before. Beyond the initial catchiness, there really isn't much substance. Thus, once you grow tired of these five songs, this EP will most likely end up in the used bin at your local record store or possibly just collecting dust in your closet.
