    Bill Mallonee is an American singer-songwriter who began playing in Athens, Georgia, during the 1980s and formed Vigilantes of Love in 1990. The group grew from an acoustic project into a changing electric band built around his songs, joining roots-rock and Americana to jangling guitars and prominent harmonica. Mallonee's writing placed Christian belief in direct conflict with doubt and desire; one recurring method was the sharply drawn story, from postwar family memory to Charles Whitman in "Bolt Action." Audible Sigh, delayed by a label collapse before True Tunes issued it, presented the band in a settled and accessible form, with countryish textures and guest appearances that did not erase its sound. By Perfumed Letter, the guitars had given way in part to organs and a layer of distorted Brit-pop texture.

    At the beginning of 2002, Mallonee disbanded Vigilantes of Love and began issuing solo records while retaining much of the old musical vocabulary. The first solo releases kept the folk-rock foundation but gave it a more experimental edge, then turned toward songs about lost love and the strain of life as a working musician. The 2003 national release of Perfumed Letter on Paste made the change more pronounced, assembling new material with songs carried over from the first solo recordings. Contemporary reviewers were divided over whether its electronic arrangements suited Mallonee's rough rock voice, though they continued to recognize the songwriting. He carried on independently after the label failures of the Vigilantes years and remains active as a solo artist, releasing music through his own small-scale operation.
