    Coldplay is a British rock band formed around University College London in 1996, with its first concert following in January 1998. The early group built songs around Chris Martin's piano and voice; Jonny Buckland supplied ringing guitar, while the rhythm section kept the arrangements restrained. The 2000 debut Parachutes moves between guitar-led pop-rock, sparse piano pieces, and semi-acoustic ballads, with melancholy carried by concise, hook-heavy melodies. A Rush of Blood to the Head retained the minor-key atmosphere and romantic self-questioning but added harder attacks, fuller arrangements, and a clearer balance between quiet and loud. By X&Y, the band had enlarged that approach into mid-tempo stadium rock, using synthesizers and chiming guitar while keeping Martin's searching, sometimes explicitly spiritual lyrics at the center.

    Will Champion joined in 1998, completing the lineup with Chris Martin, Jonny Buckland, and Guy Berryman. After X&Y, Coldplay moved further toward large-scale pop and electronic production without abandoning the piano-led songwriting that had carried the early albums. The change became pronounced with Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends in 2008, whose orchestral textures and historical imagery replaced much of the earlier intimacy. Later releases continued that expansion through programmed sounds and guest performers, while the band kept touring on a stadium scale. Martin also remained associated with humanitarian causes, including Oxfam during the group's early rise. Coldplay remained active through the Music of the Spheres tour, which ran from 2022 into 2025, and released Moon Music in 2024.
