mewithoutYou was a Philadelphia rock band formed in 2001 from a side project involving members of The Operation. Its early music fused post-hardcore force with an unusually literary Christian vocabulary, built around Aaron Weiss's half-spoken, half-screamed delivery. On [A->B] Life, released through Tooth & Nail in 2002, ragged guitars and thundering drums drove abrupt shifts from short assaults into quieter passages, while the lyrics moved between romantic unease, lust, and direct appeals to God. The result could sound both menacing and melancholy, with occasional Middle Eastern textures and electronic beats. Catch for Us the Foxes kept the angular guitar framework but gave the songs more room to breathe in 2004: melody became more prominent, the screaming was moderated, and Weiss articulated more of the words. Its confessions remained severe, but the band sounded less like a barrage and more like a tightly shaped album.
The Operation ended soon after mewithoutYou formed, leaving the new band to pursue its own course; it signed to Tooth & Nail and issued its first full-length in 2002. Daniel Pishock left after Catch for Us the Foxes, and the group continued through further lineup changes, including Brandon Beaver's arrival in 2012. It released Brother, Sister in 2006 and remained active across several labels and recording cycles after its Tooth & Nail period. In January 2020, mewithoutYou announced that it would conclude its run, although the farewell schedule was delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic. The final shows took place in Philadelphia in August 2022, closing a 21-year span.
