Smalltown Poets is a Christian alternative rock band formed in Tifton, Georgia, in 1996 by musicians who had previously played as Villanelle. Michael Johnston's lead vocals and songwriting helped shape the band's early identity, which joined jangling acoustic and electric guitars to clean production, melodic keyboards and direct Christian lyrics. The 1997 debut balanced driving rock with acoustic folk, while its songs moved between radio-ready ballads and sharper treatments of doubt, temptation and conversion. Listen Closely retained that light alternative-pop framework but used more mandolin, strings and intricate lyric imagery, including the astronomy metaphor in "Quasar." With Third Verse in 2000, producer Paul Ebersold helped the group stretch its arrangements while Johnston's writing continued to confront faith in plain, forceful language.
In 2001, several members left, leaving Johnston and bassist Miguel DeJesus to consider whether Smalltown Poets could continue as a much smaller group. The band did not formally break up, but touring and family responsibilities led to a hiatus in 2004 as its members moved into separate lives. They regrouped in 2010, bringing the original five-member lineup back together for new recording work. Smalltown Poets subsequently returned to regular releases, including the 2018 album Say Hello, while collaborating across several states rather than working from one shared base.
