Spy Glass Blue was formed in Dallas in 1995 by Allan Aguirre during the collapse of Scaterd Few. The project began as an independent outlet, with Shadows establishing a sound built from gothic rock, psychedelia, modern rock, and a trace of punk. Aguirre's vocals moved between a haunted swoop and a forceful delivery, while the lyrics confronted hypocrisy and spiritual confusion through dense poetic images. Loud As Feathers shifted toward brighter, more danceable rock with prominent David Bowie influence, catchy hooks, and a fuller studio polish. By The Blue EP, the band had moved further into post-punk and late-1980s alternative rock, using precise guitar patterns beneath deep, Joy Division-style vocals. Its most characteristic contrast came in "Stymie," where dark, intricate lyrics rode a comparatively direct musical structure.

Scaterd Few was revived in 1998, and Aguirre later issued new material through his Accidental Sirens label while continuing Spy Glass Blue. The group appeared at Cornerstone during this period, and its personnel changed between the Shadows and The Blue EP lineups. The Blue EP arrived in 2003 as a transitional release, with reviewers describing its strongest songs as evidence of a darker direction that had not yet reached its full intensity. By 2004, Spy Glass Blue had effectively broken up.
