This is Cave In's final release on Hydra Head before their debut major label full-length drops in February of 2003. Catch Cave In on tour with Sparta and then in the UK opening for Foo Fighters.
Cave In fans are still awaiting the full-length follow up to 2000's amazing Jupiter album. While the band gave us a small preview of what they were up to earlier this year with the release of a 2 song single, Cave In decided this was not enough. To ease the blow of having to wait longer still the band have released Tides of Tomorrow, an EP of material that is decidedly different than anything being recorded for their RCA debut. Different, yes...but equally amazing I'm sure! I probably shouldn't be reviewing this because Cave In is my favorite band right now. They could fart on tape and I'd probably love it. Fortunately for you that's not what they do here. Instead they create 5 songs of rock and roll perfection in addition to offering up their interpretation of "The Callus" by, indie rock legends, Giant's Chair. Cave In fans might be a bit caught off guard by the slight difference in sound found in these songs. But what Cave In has done here is shown that they are not afraid to flex some musical muscle and branch out a bit. This is most evident on the title track, which finds singer/guitarist Stephen Brodsky in the role of crooner over a laid back musical bed until the song climaxes toward the end and showcases a beautiful guitar solo that ranks up there with the kind of axe work you might expect from Page or Townsend. Other musical treats include the techno-like thump and surfish chords of "Come Into Your Own", the falsetto vocal and heavy riffing of "Dark Driving" and the heavy bass groove of "The Calypso". This is easily a contender for my favorite release of 2002. Can't wait for that full length in February!
