To start off, let me set the record straight: David Benson did not become a satanist. This is a false rumor, which has been disproved. In fact, David Benson has released a couple of new songs on MP3.com that are quite Christ-centered. That said, now for the review. . .
With his second release, Purpose of the Cross, David Benson and his band of merry men wander the same path they did in Holy Psychotherapy. Yep, pretty much a Holy Psychotherapy pt. II, only with a few more minutes of music, counting the two remixes of songs from (say it with me) Holy Psychotherapy: "America Wake Up" and "Holy Psychotherapy". Deja-vu, anyone?
The strong points are, of course, David's dead-on Ozzy Osbourne vocals and the Black Sabbath-esque sound the band incorporates. Although I am a tad bit frustrated that the guitars just don't achieve the same blistering riffage from Ozzy's solo career. The lyrics are pretty straight forward, nothing too deep and allegorical, so it works well for handing 'em to your unsaved metalhead friends. The printing quality on the CD cover looks like it was xeroxed- badly- so the lyrics are sort of hard to read. Otherwise Purpose of the Cross is a decent buy.
