Day of Atonement is a band consisting of Phil Gibson (ex-Mortification, Callous), Lincoln Bowen (current Mortification), and some guy named Davey that I don't think we've ever heard of before. They're going the death/grind route here (probably what Phil and Lincoln were hoping to play when they hooked up with Mort.), and obviously they know what they're doing with it. As you know, Phil really likes to play fast, so we're treated to tons of lightning fast double bass and large doses of blast beats as well. The vocals sound like they're put through some sort of effect and then doubled -- I'm just taking not too educated guesses here -- but they're very thick and completely incoherent, although probably not as growly as some would like. Also worthy of note here is a cover of Mortification's "Blood World", done in the DOA grinding style. Not the best song on the album, but far more intense than the original.
My biggest regret in listening to this is knowing that Lincoln has it in him to rip off some flashy solos, but instead he sticks strictly to rhythm. That could have had the potential to separate DOA from the pack in their genre, but instead their quite recognizable but not outstanding sound lands them smack in the center of all those bands that are good but still looking up at the true giants. Not at all a purchase to regret, but probably one that won't garner much time in the player after a month or so.
