Resurrection Band veteran Glenn Kaiser has formed a new "power trio" consisting of himself, fellow Resurrection Band alum Roy Montroy on bass, and drummer Ed Bialach. Kaiser's trademark gravelly vocals and crunchy guitar work reflect his passionate lyrics on this blues/rock set. Having penned 13 of the 14 songs on the album, Kaiser deals with subjects such as the Rapture ("Thief"), the sorrow and pain of life ("My Backyard") and ("Homesick Blues"), and hope ("Three Below Zero"). One song even speaks to workaholics. "The Toll" asks, "Are you a slave to your own definition of happiness? / Climbin' to the top of your favorite ladder / Years later question how you missed what mattered." Kaiser speaks from his heart, but sometimes comes across harshly.

Musically, this group keeps it simple and real. The sound is very raw, gutsy rock, with a dollop of straight blues, complete with harmonica and slide guitar. There are also some hints of vintage Resurrection Band, as would be expected. Kenny Wayne Shepherd comes to mind on a few cuts, and "On My Dyin' Bed" sounds a bit like Guardian's "Do You Know What Love Is?"

Bottom line, this CD rocks. However, if one listens to the lyrics, there is a tinge of darkness and sadness throughout. This combination makes for an authentic blues record, but will also please rock fans. There is a very live feel, which should translate well in performances.

Winter Sun is an interesting departure from the "norm" as far as Christian rock goes, but it is a welcome one.
